Understanding the Function, Damage, and Replacement of Tow Eye Covers

A tow eye cover is one of those small exterior parts which are barely noticed by motorists until it disappears or breaks. Typically found in the front or rear bumper area, it is designed to cover the entrance to the towing eye access hole on the car.

Even though it may be small, replacing a missing or broken tow eye cover will allow restoring your vehicle's look and protecting it from the usual dirt and debris.

What Is a Tow Eye Cover?

Quite often, automobiles have an access point for attaching the towing eye. The tow eye cover fits this entry point and is used only when the towing eye is not necessary.

It is specially designed to match the bumper in terms of shape and color. While some designs are colored, others remain plain.

Keep in mind that the cover is not a towing eye itself and cannot be used for that purpose.

Why Do Tow Eye Covers Break?

There are several possible reasons for the tow eye covers becoming loose or getting damaged:

* Minor damage from parking affecting the bumper.
* Damaged retaining clips or attachment points.
* Accidental detachment during the repair process.
* Scratches and scuffs due to wear and tear.
* Improper fitting after usage of the towing eye.
* Removal of covers after the bodywork was repaired.

It might be hard to fasten the cover if the surrounding bumper is bent.

Can You Replace the Cover by Itself?

Usually, yes. Provided that the bumper is intact and the attachment points have not been damaged, replacement of the tow eye cover only will suffice.

The compatibility must be considered. The geometry, size, clip configuration and finishing differ from one vehicle to another and from year to year.

Before purchasing, verify the make, model and production year of your vehicle. Make sure that the cover is designed for the front or rear bumper and should be painted prior to fitting.

What Must Be Done Prior to Installation?

Check the hole and surrounding bumper for any cracks or deformation. Ensure that the attachment points are undamaged and the replacement fits properly without excessive effort.

If the cover does not fit properly, ensure that the part number is correct and do not try to push it on.

An alternative for completing the bumper repair and giving it a nice looking exterior would be a tow eye cover. Using a proper part for the car will definitely do the trick.
